Bifteki, in 5 ideas
- A thumbprint in the center keeps them from puffing up.
- Stuffing with feta is the classic taverna move.
- Rest them like steak, the juices redistribute.
- Serve in pita with tomato, onion and tzatziki.
- Do not press them on the grill, you squeeze out the juice.
What you need
Ingredients
- 500g ground beef
- 1 onion, finely grated
- 1 tomato, grated
- 60g breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 100g feta, in cubes (optional)
- Olive oil
- Salt and pepper
How to make it
Directions
- Mix the beef, onion, tomato, breadcrumbs, egg, oregano, salt and pepper.
- Divide into 4 portions; press a feta cube into the center of each and seal (if using).
- Shape into oval patties with a thumbprint in the middle.
- Grill or pan fry over medium high heat, 5 to 6 minutes per side.
- Rest 5 minutes and serve in pita with salad.
Money saver. Grate the tomato instead of buying canned, one fresh tomato is all you need and costs less.
